Birder's World Photo of the Week - A new photo is chosen every Monday, and every other month a professional bird photographer picks the best Photo of the Week over the previous two months. The winner receives a free one-year subscription to the magazine, plus the photo will be published in the magazine.

Monthly

BetterPhoto.com Photography Contest - Open only to BetterPhoto students and BetterPholio subscribers. Categories include Nature & Landscapes, Animals & Wildlife, People, Elements of Design, Digital Darkroom, Travel Photography & Place, Flowers, Details & Macro. There is also a Catch-All and Monthly Theme; December's theme is "Things We Want." All first-place winners will receive a $25 BetterPhoto Gift Card. Grand Prize is a Deluxe BetterPholio™ website. Deadline: Dec. 31, 2011.

Hallmark Card Contests - Although not necessarily a traditional photo contest, there is a chance to win a prize of $250 - $500 for your photo and short text if you can create a winning greeting card for the current contest theme. Upcoming: Jan. 9 - create a very funny Latino-style birthday card; Feb. 6 - create a hilarious birthday card featuring a photo of your pet.

PamperedPuppy.com - Send in pictures of your pampered pooch! Thirteen prizes to be awarded. Open to adults over the age of 18 in Canada and USA (excluding Hawaii and Alaska). Deadline: Dec. 20, 2011.

Annual

2012 Nikon Small World Photo Contest (Photography through Microscope) - Digital or film photography through a microscope. Photomicrographs must be taken using a light microscope, such as one of the Nikon series of compound or stereoscopic microscopes. The use of Nikon equipment is not required. Entries judged on originality, informational content, technical proficiency, and visual impact. Deadline: April 30, 2012.

2012 Pet Photo Contest - The Humane Society of the United States' annual Spay Day Pet Photo Contest is just around the corner. Get your best pet photo and prepare to enter when the contest kicks off in January 2012. Details will be announced in early January.

2012 Shaker Workshop Photography Contest - Open to all photographers, amateur or professional. Purpose: To illustrate the best aspects of Shaker design and to demonstrate the successful use of Shaker furniture and accessories in everyday life. Categories are Interior Shots and Exterior Shots. First Place winner receives a $100 Shaker Workshops Gift Certificate, plus winning photo will appear on the Shaker Workshops catalog. Deadline: June 15, 2012.

2012 Sony World Photography Awards - Now includes more competitions than ever before. Categories are Open Competition (for amateurs and enthusiasts); Professional Competition (for serious photographers); Youth Award (for under 20); Moving Image Award (for those experimenting with moving image narrative formats); Student Focus (for higher education photography students age 18-28); 3D Award (for anyone using true 3D technology in their photography or video). Winners receive international exposure, digital SLR camera camera equipment from Sony, monetary prizes, and more. Deadline: Jan. 4, 2012.

2012 World Press Photo Contest - Open to all professional press photographers. Entry forms released each October; judging takes place in the beginning of February each year.

Other

My Montana Photo Contest - Submit your most amazing photo that truly captures the essence of what Montana means to you. Winner receives a 4-day/3-night trip for two to either Glacier or Yellowstone National Park. Deadline: Jan. 9, 2012.
